Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar International Airport (IATA: NAGICAO: VANP), also known as Sonegaon Airport, is a public domestic and international airport serving the city of Nagpur, Maharashtra, India. It was named for Bhimrao "Babasaheb" Ambedkar, the famous Indian economist, jurist and politician . Strategically located and in a prosperous region, Nagpur Airport figures to play prominently in the spectacular growth of air travel in India. The airport connects Nagpur to India's main aviation hubs of Mumbai and Delhi, as well as the international destinations Sharjah and Doha.

Maharashtra Airport Development Corporation will be making a special purpose vehicle for undertaking the Rs-2,500-crore Multimodel International Hub Airport project spread over 2,500 acres (10 km²). "The 3,200-metre-by-45-metre runway will become 3,600 metres by 60 metres so that wide-bodied aircraft like boeing 747s can also land here," airport officials said.

The techno-feasibility study was completed in 2001 and global tenders, inviting design consultants, were floated recently. The work on the parallel runway should begin soon. The Nagpur airport will be built in sucha manner that by 2025 it can handle 50 aircraft daily and 14 million passengers in a year. Almost the 70% of modernisation work has been completed; the remainder will be over by June 2008. The terminal buildings measures 8,500 m² (91,000 sq ft) and 7,000 m² (75,000 sq ft) is being added to the existing building to give it a rectangular shape. The new building will comfortably handle 600 passengers at a time.

[edit] High-Tech Medical Centre

A state-of-the-art mediacl inspection centre is coming up in a bid to provide free health facilities to air passengers in case of emergencies at the airport.

There have been several cases where authorities have had to handle passengers suffering from cardiac arrest and other medical complications. The Airports Authority of India has finalised a plan to set up a 24-hour medical care centre jointly with hospital group Hope Hospitals at the airport to tackle these situations. The medical centre will have a medical officer, experts along with other staff round the clock to provide medical care to passengers; they will have the latest medical equipment and life-saving drugs. AAI also has plans to set up a child-care centre at the airport premises to provide privacy to mothers who want to breast-feed.

[edit] Pre-paid taxi and AC bus service

The Airport Authority of India has plans to start pre-paid taxi and auto rickshaws srevices and the Vansh Nimaya Infraprojects Ltd, the company that operates Star Bus in the city, is now planning to run air conditioned buses to provide a cost-effective alternative way of commuting between the airport and the center of the city.

AAI plans to start such pre-paid taxi services and has already held meetings with the regional transport officer and traffic police officials in this regard and also about fixing of pre-paid auto and taxi fares from the airport. The pre-paid services are going to start once the ongoing work on modernising the airport is completed. The airport now has only car-rental services that are operated by private taxi operators. Starbus has plans to introduce specially designed air conditioned coaches to connect the airport and Sadar, Chhatrapati Square, Rahate Colony, Panchasheel Square and Sitabuldi will be the pick-up points for commuters, according to plans now.

The buses will be operated on the route and the timings will be worked out in such a way that they coincide with a bulk of arrivals to and departures from the city airport.

The Airport Authority of India has developed a viewers' gallery in the old terminal building of the airport. The gallery was recently opened to the public after making some modifications in the old building and was drawing a huge response from citizens.

The new-look city terminal will be equipped with two aerobridges that will allow passengers to board and disembark the aircraft from the terminal building itself. The work for these adjustable-height aerobridges is going on in full swing. Both the aerobridges would be operational by July 2008, a senior Airports Authority of India official informed.

[edit] Duty-Free Shop

The duty-free shop will come in the main terminal building and international travellers can load up on stuff like cosmetics, watches, electronic goods and imported items like internationally acclaimed wines and chocolates.

An Internet cyber cafe is already present at the main terminal building and it has three high-speed broadband terminals. The Mumbai-based company that operates the cafe plans to expand capacity once the modernisation work is complete.

The State Bank of India and United Western Bank have evinced keen interest in setting up automated teller machine counters, which will be set up near the main entrance to the terminal building.
