The principal inspiration and source for the expansion of this article is Patrick C. Griffin's fascinating thesis The Mac Lochlainn High-Kingship in Late Pre-Norman Ireland (TCD, 2002). As at today, it is available here. I have endeavoured not to paraphrase or otherwise closely follow Mr Griffin's fine work, but instead to employ it as a source of references, and as a general guide to the [to me] confusing chronology of this period.
