Dokha is an Iranian tobacco mixed with leaves, bark and herbs, generally smoked in a pipe called a midwakh. It is popular in the United Arab Emirates.

Dokha comes in many strengths, flavours and names. The strengths range from "cold" (the mildest) to "extra hot" (the harshest). It can also be flavoured with strawberries, banana, apple, raspberries and a variety of other fruits. Unlike flavoured shisha tobacco, dokha is not flavoured with molasses. The variety providing the strongest "buzz" is referred to as laf raas (translated literally from Arabic: head wrap).

Dokha contains a greater concentration of nicotine than regular tobacco[citation needed], which is responsible for the "buzz" experienced by smokers, in combination with the practice of holding the smoke in the lungs for longer than is typical for a cigarette.

[edit] Common brands

  • Rabsha is probably the most common brand available in the United Arab Emirates.
  • Mirdif Star is exclusively sold in the Mirdif region of Dubai, and is made from a different type of tobacco leaf than Rabsha, giving it a more bitter taste.
  • Asgar Aziz is exclusively sold in the Safa region of Dubai.
