[edit] History
The history of Mystras begins since 1249, when the prince of Franks William II Villehardouin built a castle which surrounded the mountain.
In 1259 after the Battle of Pelagonia, the Byzantine Emperor Michael VIII Palaiologos captured Villehardouin who exchanged for his freedom the castles of Peloponnese including Mani, Monemvasia and Mystras. Since then the security which was provided by the castle attracted much people who came and built their houses near it.
