"Dessine-moi un mouton" is a 1999 song recorded by the French artist Mylène Farmer first in a studio version and then in a live version at the time of her 1999 concert tour Mylenium Tour. The song was the only single from her third live album, Mylenium Tour, and was released on December 5, 2000.

[edit] Background and writing
Originally, "Dessine-moi un mouton" should be released as the second, then the third, then the fourth single from the album Innamoramento.[1] Finally, the song was released much later and only in a live version to promote the live album Mylenium Tour. However, some people consider that the song is in fact the sixth single from the studio album, and so, that Innamoramento is the second album which, in France, has generated no least than six hits listed in the top ten.[2]
Just before the single's release, a rumor went round that the video was already underway and would have been filmed in Corsica in a scenery evoking Antoine de Saint-Exupéry's Le Petit Prince, of which the song is widely inspired.[3] According to another unconfirmed rumor, Farmer would have bought the royalties to the author's family in order to create a musical directed by other producers. In the end, none of this would proved correct.[4]
Finally, the single was released at the same time as the live album and has enabled this one to become straight number one on the French Albums Chart. For the first time in her career, Farmer has used her own drawings to illustrate the CD maxi and vinyl's covers, where she represented herself, next to a sheep. Thereafter, she has also used her drawings for the video of "C'est une belle journée", as well as in her book Lisa-Loup et le Conteur.[3]
The song is available in the album version on Innamoramento and in the live version on Mylenium Tour. However, just like the previous live single "La Poupée qui fait non", the song was not included on the best of Les Mots.
[edit] Lyrics and music
As the title suggests, the song is based on Antoine de Saint-Exupery's novella, Le Petit Prince.[5] Of course, "Farmer doesn't tell the novella's story in her song, but uses the writer's philosophy to draw inspiration". "Dessine-moi un mouton" deals with life, love, death, and is "a plea for childhood, imagination and insoucience".[6]
[edit] Music video
The video was produced with images from 1999 tour,[7] when Farmer performed the song sitting on a giant swing. Nevertheless, for the TV version, the entire part devoted to the presentation of musicians and the recalls were deleted, but included in the DVD Mylenium Tour.
[edit] Critical reception
"Dessine-moi un mouton" was generally very well-received by contemporary pop music critics. Many fans felt that the single was the biggest hit of the album. A Belgian magazine considered this song is absolutely identical to "XXL", using many big guitars ; it also said that it was very representative of Farmer's work and was sensed as a future single from the album's release.[8]
However, the French magazine Instant-Mag considers that the sales of the single have not been aided by the CD single's cover which was very simple, and that the song in its live version loses much of its energy from the version original, because of the choice of the musical arrangements. In addition, the remixes have not pleased everyone, unlike Farmer's drawings used on the CD maxi.[9]
[edit] Chart performances
In French SNEP Singles Chart, the single did not fail its entry into the top ten - the 21st of Farmer - on December 9, 2000, where it reached number 6. However, the following week, he made a very big fall to 28th, then dropped evenly, although it regained some positions sometimes. It left the chart after 16 weeks of attendance.[10]
In Switzerland, the song reached its highest position (#55) in its third week, on January 21, 2001, but stayed only one more week on the chart. Fifteen days later (on February 11), it made a furtive reentry, and then disappeared again.[11]
