Hi. I think your second suggestion is great, removing the repetition of pogrom in two consecutive sentences.

The article was the subject of lengthy mediation between me and another editor, so I try to be very careful that changes to the article don't appear to favor either the Hasidic or the Black POV concerning the riot.
