The Dayton Bombers are entering their 17 season as an ECHL ice hockey team located in Dayton, Ohio, USA. The team is in the North Division of the ECHL's American Conference. The team was affiliated with the Syracuse Crunch of the AHL and the Columbus Blue Jackets of the NHL, an affiliation which ended October 4, 2007, as the Bombers were replaced by the Elmira Jackals [1].
The Bombers originally played at Hara Arena from 1991-1996. The team moved to the Ervin J. Nutter Center on the campus of Wright State University in Dayton in 1996. They have played in front of over 2 million fans in their 17 years.
2006-07 In the 2006-07 season Bombers fans saw their team come back from the depths, winning 17 more games than the previous season and becoming North Division Champs by beating their rivals, the Cincinnati Cyclones, 4 games to 3. The Bombers then went on to become American Conference Champions by beating the Florida Everblades 4 games to 3. From there they went on to face the National Conference Champion Idaho Steelheads in the Kelly Cup Finals. In this championship series the Steelheads defeated the Bombers 4 games to 1 to become ECHL Champions.
2007-08 The 2007-08 campaign has been a rebuilding year for the Bombers. They hired Bill McDonald as head coach and made themselves a independent affiliate for this season. Attendance was normal for the year but the Bombers for three dates this year saw attendance over 7,000 which has only happened one other season since the Bombers moved to the Nutter Center 12 years ago. During the 2006-07 the Bombers saw crowds of 9,989 on opening night (Nov. 4 2006), 7,845 saw the Bombers drop a 1-0 decision to Cincinnati on January 27th and on March 10th when the Bombers welcomed 7,411 to see them down the Wheeling Nailers 4-2. The Bombers did not see the top of the division this year and since mid-December, they were in the 3-4-5 spot in the division. The team played in their second straight season in the ECHL postseason, where they were shut out in a best-of-three series to the Johnstown Chiefs.
