Hi there David. Firstly I have removed the warning that was left on your page by an anonymous user last night as I think it was both excessive and unfair in that it did not explain what the problem was. I will try and set out here why your edits have been being reverted:

  1. Wikipedia takes a very strong line on self-promotion and people writing articles about themselves is discouraged as firstly we believe that they cannot be neutral if written by the subject and secondly we believe that if the subject of the article meets the notability requirements then someone else, not personally involved, will create the article.
  2. As Wikipedia is one of the most popular websites in the world it is a target for spammers trying to promote their own websites etc. This why we have very clear policies on the adding of external links to articles.
  3. Wikipedia is not a personal webspace provider. The proper place for links to your genealogy pages is on your own website outside Wikipedia or on a site like MySpace.
  4. The article David Shallcross is about an Australian academic. Notability issues aside, the proper place to post information about another person who shares the same name is on a separate page, named to distinguish itself from the original, eg David Shallcross (business man). I don't however recommend that you do this as it would likely be very quickly deleted for the reasons explained in point 1 above.

Hope this helps to explain; as you would expect a project the size of Wikipedia can only function successfully within a framework of guidelines and policies which are necessarily quite extensive and thus for a newcomer can be quite overwhelming at first - a good place to start would be looking at some of the links in the welcome message at the top of the page.
