Daviess County is a county located in the U.S. state of Kentucky. It was formed in 1815. As of 2000, the population was 91,545. The population estimate for 2005 is 93,060. It is included in the Owensboro, Kentucky Metropolitan Statistical Area. Its county seat is Owensboro, Kentucky^[1]. The county is named for Colonel Joseph Hamilton Daviess, the U.S. Attorney who prosecuted Aaron Burr.

Daviess County is part of the Western Coal Fields region of Kentucky. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 476 square miles (1,234 km²), of which, 462 square miles (1,198 km²) of it is land and 14 square miles (36 km²) of it (2.91%) is water.

As of the census^[2] of 2000, there were 91,545 people, 36,033 households, and 24,826 families residing in the county. The population density was 198 people per square mile (76/km²). There were 38,432 housing units at an average density of 83 per square mile (32/km²). The racial makeup of the county was 93.69% White, 4.35% Black or African American, 0.13% Native American, 0.43% Asian, 0.02% Pacific Islander, 0.44% from other races, and 0.94% from two or more races. 0.92% of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There were 36,033 households out of which 32.90% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 53.60% were married couples living together, 11.80% had a female householder with no husband present, and 31.10% were non-families. 27.10% of all households were made up of individuals and 11.10% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.47 and the average family size was 3.00.

In the county the population was spread out with 25.80% under the age of 18, 9.00% from 18 to 24, 28.40% from 25 to 44, 23.00% from 45 to 64, and 13.80% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 37 years. For every 100 females there were 92.60 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 88.30 males.

The median income for a household in the county was $36,813, and the median income for a family was $45,404. Males had a median income of $35,295 versus $21,971 for females. The per capita income for the county was $18,739. About 9.40% of families and 12.30% of the population were below the poverty line, including 15.60% of those under age 18 and 11.40% of those age 65 or over.
