Darwen Group

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Darwen Group is a UK bus manufacturer located in Blackburn. They took over East Lancashire Coachbuilders in August 2007, rebranding it as Darwen East Lancs and the bus and coach repair arm as Darwen North West. This was followed by the acquisition of Leyland Product Developments in November 2007. It was rebranded as Darwen LPD. In February 2008 the parent company Darwen Holdings floated on the AIM [1]. The company has announced its intention to develop integral buses, with a prototype due by June 2008. It intends to develop both hybrid and diesel versions, the hybrid in partnership with Enova. [2]

On 12 March 2008 the Optare Group was purchased by Jamesstan Investments, an investment company controlled by Darwen Holdings chairman Ron Stanley. It is believed that Optare will remain an independent company[3], and the move is thought to be down to the desire of the Darwen Group to reduce its reliance on chassis manufacturers, and a wish to draw on Optare's experience in integral bus manufacture and work in the emerging hybrid bus field.
