[edit] Biography
Dance Gavin Dance was formed out of the dissolution of several other bands, including Farewell Unknown, Ghost Runner on Third and Atherton.[1] Jonny Craig and Sean O'Sullivan joined in 2005 and early 2006 to complete the lineup.
They released their first self-produced EP on November 14, 2006, titled Whatever I Say Is Royal Ocean through Rise Records.
They entered the studio again in January 2007 with Kris Crummet, who produced Drop Dead, Gorgeous and Fear Before the March of Flames, and released their first full length CD, Downtown Battle Mountain on May 15, 2007 on Rise Records. The album was leaked on April 12, 2007.
[edit] Loss of Second Guitarist
On August 5, 2007 guitarist Sean O'Sullivan stated in a personal blog that he flew home from the current tour August 3rd and would be leaving Dance Gavin Dance to join Consider the Thief. He stated that there was no "bad blood" among himself and other Dance Gavin Dance members.
Dance Gavin Dance replaced O'Sullivan with Zac Garren, the band's merch guy.
On November 9, 2007 it was stated that the reason for Sean's leaving was caused by vocalist Jonny Craig's intolerance of his religion in a blog on the band's MySpace page. Even through all of this, Sean O'Sullivan and Jonny Craig have apparently become friends again after O'Sullivan met up with Jonny in May when Emarosa played in Sacramento, CA.
[edit] Jonny Craig's Departure
On November 9, 2007 the band posted this statement about the departure of Jonny:
| “ | We are still with Rise Records, we are still with our current manager, and we are still with our current booking agent. We will be getting a new singer as soon as we can find one. Everyone else is still in the band. If you want to audition send an email here with a sample of your singing. Right now we are all moving into a house in Sacramento to start writing for our next album. We will not abandon old songs and will still be playing them when we tour again in the near future. We understand what we are doing and we will make our next album better than the last. We want to apologize to fans who have not been able to see us due to cancelled shows. | ” |
The blog elicited a massive response from fans and other readers due to the personal information contained within.
According to the band, Jonny had threatened to leave the band many times before this but always rejoined the next day. During their tour in New Jersey, Jonny Craig had quit the band for the last time and Dance Gavin Dance left New Jersey and did not question his motive this time. They parted ways and did not feel the need to speak to each other anymore.
Jonny announced on November 19, 2007 that he joined the band Emarosa after the departure of their singer Chris.
[edit] Addition of Kurt Travis
Dance Gavin Dance had been taking public auditions and announced on December 18th that Kurt Travis, formerly of Five Minute Ride, O! The Joy and No, Not Constant would be their new permanent lead vocalist. The band went on tour with Poison the Well, The Chariot and The Locust throughout January and February 2008.
"Burning Down the Nicotine Armoire Pt. 2," an anti-smoking diatribe against big tobacco companies, is also expected to be on Dance Gavin Dance's new cd, which will bear no title. It is scheduled for release on August 19th, 2008. They have posted the songs "The Robot With The Human Hair Pt. 3", "Alex English" (which Kurt describes as the new "Bohemian Rhapsody"), and "Me And Zoloft Get Along Fine" on their Myspace page.
"Alex English" was posted on the band's Myspace on June 5th along with an all new layout and the cover art which is a composite watercolor sketch of Dance Gavin Dance's personal Deathstar. Two wallpapers were released, the aforementioned Deathstar and a Baroqueinsulaurus. The Death Star wallpaper is darker, while the Baroqueinsulaurus wallpaper uses bright pastel colors.
"Me And Zoloft Get Along Fine" was posted on the band's Myspace on June 11th.
