[edit] Playing career
Boyle was signed as an undrafted free agent by the Florida Panthers in 1998. He later went on to win the Stanley Cup with the Lightning in 2004, after being traded from the Panthers on January 7, 2002. He played college hockey for the Redhawks of Miami University in Oxford, Ohio. [1]
During game one of the 2004 Stanley Cup Finals, an electrical fire caused an estimated $300,000 worth of damage to Boyle's home in Florida.[1]
Boyle recorded three goals and an assist against the New York Rangers on December 23, 2006, his first career hat trick.
In September, 2007, after a pre-season game, Boyle injured himself in a freak accident when a skate slipped off a hook on his locker and hit him in the left wrist, cutting three tendons.[2] He attempted to return on October 29, 2007, but after playing his first 4 games of the season, needed to undergo additional surgery on the injured wrist[3], he missed another 36 games and did not make a full comeback until January 24, 2008.
On February 25, 2008, Boyle was re-signed to a six year, $40 million contract with the Tampa Bay Lightning.[4]
