Talk:Da Brat

[edit] Lesbian Suspicion
I'm editing "Da Brat is a proud lesbian." As a Black, gay man, I would love it if there was another famous, Black gay person. However, I have never seen any source where she officially came out. Some wonder if she is romantically involved with Mariah Carey, but again that's a rumor. So I deleted that line, but welcome anyone to add it back if they have proof. jcm 5/7/8 —Preceding unsigned comment added by 143.228.129.9 (talk) 13:56, 7 May 2008 (UTC)
oops, in my edit comment I said that Da Brat was not the first gangsta rapper. While that was true, I meant to say that she was not the first female gangsta rapper and I doubt anyone could argue that she was (Yo-Yo's debut came out in 91), though nobody ('cept maybe Lil Kim) else had had much commercial success. Just didn't want anyone to think I was misinterpreting the article as it stood... Tuf-Kat
Yeah, my bad. I forgot about Lady Of Rage. I actually didn't know she was pre-Brat. Is Yo Yo "gangsta"? Isn't she that woman who used to do the songs with Latifah?
- allmusic says Lady of Rage debuted in 1991 on a L.A. Posse album (and she appeared on multiple subsquent Death Row albums, including Doggystyle), though no solo records came out until 97. I suppose Yo-Yo's gangsta rapness could be questioned -- as far as I know, Yo-Yo never worked with Latifah, and allmusic doesn't list her under "worked with" -- but she is definitely at least hardcore hip hop, and in 1992, that was virtually synonymous with gangsta rap, though I'm not familiar enough with her music personally to know what's she like exactly. what qualifies someone as a gangsta rapper? how much they curse? refer to weed? ryhming about the bling they have? sex? how many times the n-word is tossed throughout the album? well, if that's the criteria, Brat's defeinitely certified gangsta. she may not be the first female to do it, but she is the first to do it big.(her 1994 debut, FUNKDIFIED, was the first rap album by a female to sell a million copies. her ANUTHTANTRUM CD was certified gold and just fell short of platinum status. and every'body was noddin' in 2000 when she dropped WHAT'CHU LIKE and THAT'S WHAT I'M LOOKIN' FOR; which helped her third cd UNRESTRICTED, go double platinum, i don't know if this edit should be on this page, i just had to get that off.
well to be a gangsta you must be in a gang. i am from the chi i can tell that she might be in a Vicelord faction i dont know which one, but she is from the westside (Austin neighborhood, i think) thats where the mosts vicelords are at. and i saw her in some videos with her hat to the left, like all Vicelords and People are soposed to. In the "Oh I Think Dey Like Me" video she said something like "Im not ordinary people theres a star in yo presence" also a 5 point star pops up in the video and referring to "ordinary PEOPLE" that means people nation. if you confused just search for vicelord and people nation on this website------JuSrAy
a gangsta rapper is not the same as a gangster. You do not have to be in a gang to be a gangsta rapper its more about the subject material. ie no one from N.W.A claimed to be from a specific gang but they were gangsta rappers. Its more about what you talk about and how "hard" you are claiming to be.
[edit] Film debut?
I thought Da Brat's "feature film debut" came much earlier than Glitter. Wasn't she in Kazaam with Shaquille O'Neal?216.70.147.136 16:44, 8 May 2007 (UTC)Jeicyn

Image:Brattatatat.jpg is being used on this article. I notice the image page specifies that the image is being used under fair use but there is no explanation or rationale as to why its use in Wikipedia articles constitutes fair use. In addition to the boilerplate fair use template, you must also write out on the image description page a specific explanation or rationale for why using this image in each article is consistent with fair use.
Please go to the image description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale. Using one of the templates at Wikipedia:Fair use rationale guideline is an easy way to insure that your image is in compliance with Wikipedia policy, but remember that you must complete the template. Do not simply insert a blank template on an image page.
If there is other other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified the fair use rationale on the other images used on this page. Note that any fair use images uploaded after 4 May, 2006, and lacking such an explanation will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you.BetacommandBot 17:50, 1 June 2007 (UTC)
