Am redirecting Cut-Me-Own-Throat Dibbler to here. Nothing from that article appears worth merging, but if someone wants to try then the last version is here [1].
- It should have been the other way around, ah well. — Ambush Commander(Talk) 19:55, July 22, 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Smorgasbord?
I added the information that Dib Diblossonson sold "bottomless smorgasbord". However following that link, I've found that smorgasbord isn't what I thought it was, or what I suspect Pratchett thought it was (a topless sandwich, probably herring). I will research this further. - Well, that didn't take long. It turns out the word I was looking for was Smørrebrød. I can see how the confusion arises.
- I've kept Pratchett's word, but changed the link to open sandwich. Daibhid C 16:17 29 Oct 2005 (UTC)
- I changed it the specific link to Smørrebrød, which is in the article Cuisine of Denmark#P.C3.A5l.C3.A6g_and_sm.C3.B8rrebr.C3.B8d. Derek Balsam 17:51, 11 August 2006 (UTC)
[edit] Dibbler in The Truth
Didn't he write the invented stories for the Times' competitor? I haven't read that book for a while but I seem to remember that. - Icecradle 12:34, 27 December 2005 (UTC)
- Yes, he did. Vimescarrot 22:18, 14 January 2006 (UTC)
- One interesting observation which may or may not be fitting for the main article: If Dibbler is involved in an anachronistic-for-fantasy enterprise, it ultimately fails or results in a universe-shattering event (Moving Pictures, Soul Music, The Truth) while if he isn't, it survives and takes root. (newspapers in general in The Truth, where Dibbler was prevented from continuing by force, and in particular, clack industry) Mihara 02:12, 21 June 2007 (UTC)
[edit] Nocebo?
What's that got to do with pointy bones? Or am I missing something? Vitriol 21:02, 30 August 2006 (UTC)
- Somewhere in the middle of the nocebo article, it mentions the term's use to refer to people who die because they believe they're under a curse. One of these is apparently called "pointing the bone", and is presumably what Dibjla's nickname refers to. Does anyone know more about this? Daibhid C 14:55, 6 September 2006 (UTC)
- I linked it no 'nocebo' because, suprisingly, there's nothing on wikipedia about bone pointing except that single reference. Pointing the bone is, as I understand it, an Indigenous Australian ritual of execution. It involves a kangaroo bone which has had some kind of ritual performed on it, and is pointed at the miscreant. The pointee then sickens and dies; apparently through some form of psychosomatic response - he believes that he has been cursed and there is nothing he can do about it. John Howard has had it done to him: http://www.eniar.org/news/curse.html

[edit] basis of Dibbler
The previous version of the Dibbler page had three references to other fictional characters "on whom [Dibbler] may bave been based." Such statements are idle speculation... the alt.books.pratchett message board, among others, is FILLED with both responsible and irresponsible conjecture about the genesis of Pratchett characters, much of which turns out to be refuted by Mr. Pratchett himself.
Pratchett has very rarely noted a specific inspiration for his characters. Most of the time (when he says anything at all), he indicates that his characters are amalgamations, based on numerous similar characters in legend, myth, popular culture, and history. Unless anyone has a direct quotation from The Man himself, I would consider any statement of the basis of a Discworld character to be unverifiable, and thus unincludable.
