[edit] Career

Farrell started his career with Leeds United. Farrell signed for Carlisle United on a months loan in 2002.[1]

Following a successful loan spell at Carlisle United, Farrell signed for Carlisle United in a deal that could have risen to £50,000 depending on appearances.[2] In 2003, Farrell was placed on Carlisle United's transfer list as part of manager Paul Simpson's clear-out.[3] Farrell said he is prepared to wait patiently to earn a regular place in the first team, telling the club's website: "Karl and Magno have both been playing really well, so I can't really say much. I've only started one game this season in the LDV. I've got to keep working as hard as I can and make sure when my chance comes I take it."[4] Farrell was released by Carlisle United in 2005, along with teammates Kevin Henderson, Carlos Roca, Brian Shelley and Chris Beech.[5]

Farrell signed for Exeter City in 2005 on a one-year deal.[6] Soon after joining Exeter City, Farrell said he feels the Grecians have the belief and the right kind of players to get promoted, saying: "The players are confident, and we have a really good side here. It's very similar to the Carlisle United side of last year which I got promoted with."[7] Farrell was released by Exeter City in 2006.[8]

Farrell joined York City after being released by Exeter City in 2006.[9] He scored his first goal for York in the teams 2–2 home draw with Southport on 23 September 2006.[10]

York's manager Billy McEwan set Farrell a 15-goal target for 2006–07 season during February.[11] He played through the last two months of the 2006–07 season with torn muscle fibres in his thigh.[12] He was offered a new contract by York at the end of the 200–07 season.[13] He won the Press Player of the Year award in May 2007.[12]

His thigh injury led to a spell out of the first team at the start of the 2007–08 season. After a struggle to regain fitness, Farrell came on as a 69th minute substitute against Rushall Olympic in the FA Cup and proceeded to score the third fastest hat-trick in York's history and provide an assist for a fourth goal.[14] Following this, he was voted Player of the round for the fourth qualifying round of the FA Cup.[15] York offered him a new contract for the 2008–09 season in April, which he signed in May.[16][17]
