[edit] GIFs and PNGs

Hello and thank you for your contributions! I'm really curious. The PNG crusade bot was unable to shrink Image:SniperJoe-01.gif at all with a PNG conversion, yet you were able to manually, creating Image:SniperJoe-01.png which is 52 bytes smaller. How did you do it? —Remember the dot (talk) 22:35, 26 May 2007 (UTC)

PNGOUT will automatically try to use the lowest bit depth when converting from GIF. With this particular image, there are 15 colors in the palette, so it can be compressed as a 4bpp PNG, but it actually compresses better at 8bpp. So you can get it down to 643 bytes by running "pngout /d8" on it.
An extra byte came from running trials with randomized initial Huffman tables, which can be done in PNGOUT with the "/r" switch. CountingPine 16:14, 27 May 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Orphaned non-free image (Image:MSWinWord97 icon.png)

Thanks for uploading Image:MSWinWord97 icon.png. The image description page currently specifies that the image is non-free and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. However, the image is currently orphaned, meaning that it is not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the image was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that that will be useful. However, please note that images for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable for use on Wikipedia (see our policy for non-free media).

If you have uploaded other unlicensed media, please check whether they're used in any articles or not. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Note that any non-free images not used in any articles will be deleted after seven days, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. Thank you. Aksibot 15:25, 28 May 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Fair use rationale for Image:Boneville_screen.jpg

Thanks for uploading or contributing to Image:Boneville_screen.jpg. I notice the image page specifies that the image is being used under fair use but there is no explanation or rationale as to why its use in Wikipedia articles constitutes fair use. In addition to the boilerplate fair use template, you must also write out on the image description page a specific explanation or rationale for why using this image in each article is consistent with fair use. Suggestions on how to do so can be found here.

Please go to the image description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale. Using one of the templates at Wikipedia:Fair use rationale guideline is an easy way to ensure that your image is in compliance with Wikipedia policy, but remember that you must complete the template. Do not simply insert a blank template on an image page.

If you have uploaded other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified the fair use rationale on those pages too. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Note that any fair use images uploaded after 4 May, 2006, and lacking such an explanation will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. ShakespeareFan00 10:27, 29 June 2007 (UTC)

Do not simply insert a blank template on an image page.

If it is determined that the image does not qualify under fair use, it will be deleted within a couple of days according to our Criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you.BetacommandBot 23:38, 1 July 2007 (UTC)

[edit] I'm asking you a little service

Can you upload this image [1]. Because you made it with the image of Mario. This image is from the Mario Wiki just like the one I'm asking you to upload. And as a warning, I remarked you have serious problems with copyright policy. I'm asking you to be very careful, I already had this problem and I got blocked, and now administrators ask me to promise to stay away from images until I know everything about that policy. You should use these links if you don't wanna be in the same problem as mine.

--Mr Alex (talk) 15:18, 7 March 2008 (UTC)

To be honest, I'm not sure I understand why you want me to upload a picture for you if you think I have problems with image copyrights.

It looks like the Mario picture I updated has been removed over recent updates though - so do you think working on this picture is worthwhile anyway? CountingPine (talk) 00:03, 11 March 2008 (UTC)

I can explain. I did warn you about the copyright violation, but you made it with the image of Mario in the Mario Wiki, just like I did with a few images in the list of mario characters, they where in that wiki. The image of Luigi is in Mario Wiki too, so I don't think you'll be in big trouble if you upload it because the image Image:Mario2.png has been uploaded two month ago and it didn't get deleted yet. I don't ask you to stop uploading any images until you know the article of the Image use policy by heart, I just ask you to pay attention to the links I gave you, so it becomes easier to upload without violating policies.

P.S. I know the picture Image:Mario2.png will be deleted because it is not used in any article but,we we are gonna needa new image of Luigi, and the image in the Mario Wiki has no copyright violation so why would it be here?

Here's the link, good luck! [2]

--Mr Alex (talk) 01:14, 11 March 2008 (UTC)

Thank you, I'll use the image for the main image in the article of Luigi

[edit] Orphaned non-free media (Image:A Nightmare on Elm Street NES.png)

Thanks for uploading Image:A Nightmare on Elm Street NES.png. The media description page currently specifies that it is non-free and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. However, it is currently orphaned, meaning that it is not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the media was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that that will be useful. However, please note that media for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable for use on Wikipedia (see our policy for non-free media).

Note that all non-free media not used in any articles will be deleted after seven days, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. Thank you. BJBot (talk) 12:04, 15 March 2008 (UTC)
