Counter-terrorism committee

It is an organ of the Security Council of the United Nations
The Security Council Committee established pursuant to resolution 1373 (2001) concerning counter-terrorism will hold its fifth special meeting with international, regional and subregional organizations, on the theme “Prevention of terrorist movement and effective border security”, from 29 to 31 October 2007, at the Conference Centre of the United Nations Office at Nairobi (UNON). Member States are invited to participate in the meeting as observers.
[edit] Formation
In the wake of the September 11, 2001 attacks in the United States, the United Nations Security Council unanimously adopted resolution 1373, which, among its provisions, obliges all States to criminalize assistance for terrorist activities, deny financial support and safe haven to terrorists and share information about groups planning terrorist attacks.
The 15-member Counter-Terrorism Committee (CTC) was established at the same time to monitor implementation of the resolution. While the ultimate aim of the Committee is to increase the ability of States to fight terrorism, it is not a sanctions body nor does it maintain a list of terrorist organizations or individuals.

The Committee comprises all 15 members of the Security Council and is divided into three Sub-Committees. The current Chairman is Ambassador Mirjana Mladineo, the Permanent Representative of Croatia, who took up the post in January 2008.
The current Vice-Chairmen, who each head a Sub-Committee, are Ambassador Jorge Voto-Bernales, Permanent Representative of Peru; Ambassador Dumisani Shadrack Kumalo, Permanent Representative of South Africa; and Ambassador Nassir Abdelaziz Al-Nasser, Permanent Representative of Qatar.

The current Chairman is Ambassador Ricardo Alberto Arias, the Permanent Representative of Panama, who took up the post in January 2007. The Committee has had five previous chairpersons. The are:
