The vendace (Coregonus albula) is a whitefish found in lakes and rivers in northern Europe, especially Finland, Sweden, Russia and Estonia, and in some lochs in Scotland (Lochmaben, near Dumfries) and lakes in England. The name is probably cognate with gwyniad.
The vendace is not only found in fresh water, but also in saltwater in the Gulf of Finland and the Gulf of Bothnia. In Russia the vendace, known as "ryapushka" (Russian: ря́пушка or ряпуха ) is used in local heraldry.
This fish feeds mainly on zooplankton, like small crustaceans and their larvae. They live in schools made up of large groups of individuals. They lay their eggs on pebbly or sandy ground. The maximum length of the vendace is about 45 cm, with a maximum weight of less than one kg. The maximum age reached by this fish is about ten years.
The Tench class submarine USS Vendace (SS-430) of the American navy is named after it.
