Coppell High School is a secondary school located in Coppell, Texas, United States, a suburb of Dallas. Currently, it is the only high school in the Coppell Independent School District. The school graduated its first class of twenty-three students in 1965. As of the 2006-2007 school year, current enrollment is 2,960 students in grades 9-12. There are over 200 staff members at Coppell High School in order to accommodate the student body of nearly 3000. Athletic teams are known as the "Cowboys" or "Cowgirls" for boys' and girls' teams, respectively. The school colors are red and black.

Parents of this school's students previously voted to remove many vocational programs from the school in order to add more classes for college preparation.

Coppell High School was named a 2001-02 National Blue Ribbon School of Excellence due to the new SAS class[1]. Coppell High School has been ranked consistently as one of the "Top 1200 U.S. High Schools."

The school's population has grown increasingly in the past decade, prompting the Texas University Interscholastic League to upgrade Coppell High School from the AAAA classification to AAAAA status for academic and athletic competition; they are currently placed in District 6-5A. Coppell High School has also changed their school system from a trimester system with 5 periods per day, to a semester system with 7 periods a day.

[edit] Honors and accolades

The school was rated academically unacceptable by the state of Texas for the school year of 2005-2006. However, it claimed there were errors in the ranking, and appealed it. On October 20, 2005, the appeal was successful, and Coppell High School regained its academically acceptable status. For the 2006-2007 school year, the school was ranked as Recognized.

The Coppell High School Marching Band is considered to be one of the best bands in the state and was named the #1 Music Program in the United States. The band has won many prestigious awards in the past years. They won the 4AAAA state championship in 1999-2001. In 2001, the band participated in the 2001 Tournament of Roses Parade in Pasadena, California representing the southwest United States. In 2004, the band placed eleventh in the 2004 5AAAAA U.I.L. State Marching Contest. The CHS Honor Band was the first place runner up in the 2002-2004 State Honor Band championship.

The Coppell High School Baseball team won the 4A State Championship in 1995. The team has won 12 District Championships since 1984, progressing to these levels in state playoffs:

In 2004, the CHS Cowboys Varsity Soccer Team won the 5AAAAA state championship title.

The 2006 Coppell High School Football Team qualified for its first play-off appearance in over three years. It lost the game to Colleyville Heritage 52-20.


In Fall 2007 the Coppell Tennis Team continued their undefeated district streak to 6 years.

On March 3 2007, the Coppell High School Madrigal Singers repeated as top choir at the annual American Classic Madrigal/Chamber Music Festival.

In 2006, the Coppell High School band made ninth place in the BOA contest.

In the 2004-2005, 2005-2006, and 2006-2007 school years, the Coppell Academic Decathlon Team all went to State Competition, scoring high enough at regionals to earn a berth at the state competition. The 2005-2006 team earned 3 at region X, and 6 overall at state, and the 2006-2007 team won fourth at regionals and 19th overall at state.
