Talk:Civil union in Switzerland
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
I found information that Switzerland plans national referendum on same sex Civil Unions, in summer 2005. In late 2003 public opinion showed great support for full Civil Marriage for same sex coupels. 65% of tham agreed, and only 31% disagreed with that issue. Now after adoption of law on Civil Unions in June 2004, started "YES" campagne for support Civil unions in referendum. (small Christian Democratic Party has assembled 50 000 signatures needed to make national referendum on the issue!)
[edit] Nationwide civil unions
The canton level laws appear to provide/allow "registered partnership"/civil unions between opposite sex couples (as well as same sex couples). Do the nationwide laws also allow partnerships between opposite sex couples or only same sex couples? Nil Einne 19:51, 7 June 2006 (UTC)
- No, heterosexual couples only have the option of marriage as a matter of federal law. Cantonal laws cannot actually provide for civil unions, as civil law is an exclusive matter of federal law, but such registrations can provide some benefits in dealing with cantonal authorities, such as hospital visitation rights, etc. Sandstein 21:32, 11 October 2006 (UTC)
Total number of Registered Partnerships in 2007 is 2003 of same-sex couples - http://www.bfs.admin.ch/bfs/portal/en/index/themen/01/02/blank/key/natuerliche_bevoelkerungsbewegung/01.html —Preceding unsigned comment added by 83.12.171.218 (talk) 21:32, 20 February 2008 (UTC)
