[edit] Synopsis

The plot features teenager Clary Fray who encounters a group of warriors known as Shadowhunters after she witnesses a murder in New York. As she witnesses the murder she realizes no one else can see the Shadowhunters. Clary is not sure what to make of this so she does not call the police about the murder since the body mysteriously disappeared. The next day Clary gets a disturbing message from her mom that makes Clary think her mom is in trouble. She rushes home to find her house a mess and her mother nowhere to be found. Clary then uncovers secrets revealing links between her family and her new friends that can help her stop the shadowhunter gone bad, Valentine, from obtaining the mortal cup.

[edit] Reviews

Publishers Weekly commented that the book “is a sprawling urban fantasy packed with just about every type of creature known to the genre”.[2] Locus praised the book as "a highly readable first novel".[3] A review in the School Library Journal noted that the book contained a variety of narrative flaws including characters that were "sporadically characterized" and whose behavior was predictable. In spite of this they noted that the book was entertaining and would leave readers anticipating the next installment.[4]
