[edit] Changes and reversions to this article

On 28 October, Techmobowl made very substantial changes to this article. Since then two users have tried to revert back to the way the article was previously, and each time the revert has been undone. To prevent this from turning into some kind of revert war, I suggest that any changes, corrections and additions to the article be discussed here on the talk page, and then we amend the article in a sensible way. • I have no problem discussing this. You will notice that the two "people" are in fact one anonymous user and another who had no previous history. I have had a lot of trouble with a WP:Sock harassing me, and would suspect this is just another case. I do not believe the article, as it exists now, should be considered a start and by no means a finish. // Tecmobowl 04:31, 2 November 2006 (UTC)
    • I am sorry that people have been harassing you. I meant you no disrespect by starting this discussion here I just wanted to be positive. You may notice from the edit history that I also contributed quite a bit to the page. I'm glad that we can improve things. Salim555 12:53, 3 November 2006 (UTC)

I think the article needs expansion in a number of regards. Firstly, there is almost no detail regarding his personal life. Secondly, there needs to be more on the events in his baseball career - the Rusie trade in particular - and his achievements. Thirdly, there needs to be some attempt to place his career in the context of baseball history. What do you think? Salim555 12:58, 3 November 2006 (UTC)

  • Would agree that the noted information would be welcome. All i ask is that it is verifiable, encyclopedic and does not fall under the WP:POV arena. As in, I would stick to the facts and don't dress it up with emotional text. The only thing i would be worried about is the last part. Certainly, there is a way of doing this that benefits the article, but it should be included carefully. I look forward to your response and additions to the article. // Tecmobowl 03:55, 4 November 2006 (UTC)
  • just a reader here, i think his history is a little confusing. c.m. played july to december 1900 for the giants, was sent back to norfolk, drafted by cincinnati, and traded back to the giants, all in the same month? he was drafted by the reds in 1900 but didn't play a game for them (the sidebar only lists cincy in 1916)? if so i'd clarify it like: On December 15, 1900, the Reds traded him without playing a game right back to the Giants in exchange for Amos Rusie. or something like that. [edit] Good article

Nice to see an article with citations to back it up, good work. Mglovesfun 23:46, 27 November 2006 (UTC)

Well thanks. I did a major rewrite a few weeks ago. Haven't looked to see exactly what's changed then but i hope this article continues to grow and develop. He was a popular ballplayer. // Tecmobowl 01:53, 28 November 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Birth year

To whoever keeps changing it... you may be right as rain that 1878 is correct, but the publicly available sources all say 1880. If you've got evidence that it's 1878, you need to present it. Claiming that some obscure document at Bucknell says so, is not sufficient, because for all we know, you could be making this up. It has to be verifiable. So if they have such info available on a website, then you should include the URL to it. If not, maybe they could make you a photostat of the relevant documents, and you could post them here. I have reported this situation to an admin. Wahkeenah 02:51, 6 April 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Photo

Someone posted a new photo and said they thought it was a better photo. To me, it makes Mathewson looks like a hayseed, which he most definitely was not. The previous photo shows less facial detail but also shows him in uniform. I'm thinking of putting the old picture back. Any other opinions? And in either case, the old photo could also be used in the article. Baseball Bugs 02:21, 18 June 2007 (UTC)

It's fine to use both photos. I don't think the new, Thompson photo (Image:Christy-Mathewson-1910.jpeg) makes him look any more like a hayseed than the old, Chicago Daily News photo(Image:Christy_Mathewson_Baseball.jpg). The Thompson photo is a much better portrait, which is why I put it in. I now see that the Mlbretired template stretches the photo's aspect ratio to 1:1.37 (the original aspect ratio is 1:1.51). This makes his face look much fatter than the actual photo. The same effect no doubt occurred with the old photo but the old photo was sketchy enough that it wasn't so noticeable. I'll try to fix that. Eubulides 04:42, 18 June 2007 (UTC)
I fiddled with the page a bit and the aspect ratio is fixed now, though I suspect it may have been due to a cache problem; you might try reloading the page after clearing your browser cache. Eubulides 05:12, 18 June 2007 (UTC)
