Christopher Peter Folino (born 5 November 1968 in Pasadena, California)[1] is an acclaimed film director, screenwriter and producer whose work has been lauded in film festivals across several continents.[2]
Raised in El Monte, California, Folino attended the film departments of USC and Loyola Marymount University. He worked at several television stations and videogame companies, acquiring production, writing and directing[3] experience.
In 2006, Folino made his directorial debut with the comedy Gamers: The Movie,[4] an independent film about four friends who attempt to set the world record for playing a Dungeons & Dragons-like game. Saddled with four of the worst jobs known to man, the mockumentary was compared favorably by critics to Spinal Tap, Office Space and Napolean Dynamite. Folino was singled out for the originality of his writing voice and sure hand at directing comedy.[2]
Filmed in only six days and entirely self-financed,[5] the film featured several '80s stars: Kelly LeBrock (Weird Science), Beverly D'Angelo (Entourage, National Lampoon's Vacation), and William Katt (The Greatest American Hero). The soundtrack also includes cuts from Loverboy and other '80s bands.[2]
Even with the film's rushed production, the director's wife giving birth to twins prematurely on the first day of shooting, and maxing out $60,000 in credit cards to finance the movie,[5] the film received several positive reviews.[2] Shot entirely on 35mm film, Gamers: The Movie garnered the 2006 Best Film from the GenCon festival and several websites (Indie Film Nation, Bumscorner.com)[2] It also received Best Screenplay[6] from the Melbourne Underground Film Festival and received honors[7] from festivals on three other continents.[2]
Folino resides in Southern California with his wife, his daughter Angelina and two production babies, Dominic and Jeremy. He is currently working on several new projects. The latest is a graphic novel with William Katt, entitled "Sparks" [8].
