Chilton is a village in County Durham, in England. It is situated a few miles to the east of Bishop Auckland, and a short distance to the south of Ferryhill, on the A167. The bypass on the A167 opened on the 20 June 2005 cutting the traffic down by up to 80% through Chilton.

Chilton is currently undergoing a refurbishment to its main street costing the local councils over one million pounds. Chilton is home to a primary school (Chilton Primary). There is also a Church, Post Office, a Public House, a Doctor, Dentist, Library, and several shop units serving the local community. There is a football ground and all night automatically lit basketball court. There is a regular bus service to Darlington, Bishop Auckland, Durham and Hartlepool, and points between.

Chilton was originally a mining town and called Chilton Buildings.

A large amount of further reconstruction is planned for the village, with several long terraces of houses being partially knocked down and replaced with less intensive housing, and open pedestrianised spaces with planters will be created.

The town has a thriving allotment community, serving over 200 allotments.
