History
The Chili Cheese Burrito is an endangered menu item at Taco Bell Restaurants. The item was originally created by the restaurant Zantigo's and renamed from Chilito when the restaurant was acquired in 1986. The burrito joins the McRib as an endangered menu item because of its lack of diversity for other menu items on the Taco Bell menu. Because the chili can only be used for the burritos, franchise owners have the option to omit the item from the menu to lower store overhead. A website (http://www.chilicheese.org) was created in 2004 to combat the removal of the item from menus across the nation.
Name Change
The name of the burrito was changed from Chilito to Chili Cheese Burrito when comedian Paul Rodriguez pointed out the negative connotations of the word. The word is allegedly slang for penis in the mexican spanish dialect.
