[edit] Queen Mary

Hi, if whoever has been presenting the School of Medicine and Dentistry as independent of Queen Mary, University of London would care to discuss it here, they would be welcome. They might have a very good argument, but shouldn't ignore an invitation to discuss the matter. Kbthompson (talk) 00:08, 14 February 2008 (UTC)

Well it wasn't me, but actually I think they were probably right or at least right-ish (though I wasn't wild about their no-discussion approach). I must however take issue with your implying that calling the thing in CHS "Barts and The London" is portraying it as independent of QMUL. I think that's interpreting it a bit too much. I'd see it as a simple question of nomenclature - the institution here at CHS is Barts and The London and to call it that doesn't assert anything about QM, merely that that is what this big thing here is called. It's, if you like, a question of precision - I think it's just more accurate to call it Barts and The London since that is what we are. By all means explain that it's part of QM (though actually all the linked articles will do that for the reader anyway, in their first breath) but it just seems imprecise and annoyingly vague to call it a QM campus when there's a better name for it, and it's the name that is stuck all over the buildings here. This is especially true now that the IP Law people have gone and there really isn't, as far as I know, any non-SMD stuff here. And the TCU radiographers (-ologists??) went yonks ago. Might as well call a spade a spade, I feel. :) Nomorenonotnever (talk) 15:18, 25 April 2008 (UTC)
I have no problem with changing it, but feel it needs discussion. I think the problem arises from the relationship between the college and the medical school. If I remember correctly, undergraduates are enrolled in the college and progress to the medical school for their clinical training. When I worked there, Charterhouse Sq was still 'branded' Barts, and the London bits, well - the London. Even the university website remains confused about the relationship - almost an unwilling marriage that could lead to instant divorce - but medicine and dentistry is still listed as a department [1] of the college, rather than an independent institution. Oops sorry me again. It also (I feel) makes more sense locally, because the reason we're here is the presence of Barts (the hospital itself) just round the corner. It's not like QM just happened to decide to put a campus here - they inherited it, when the SMD became part of QM. But it makes a lot more sense to describe it as part of the SMD, which is itself a 3-campus operation (Mile End, Barts, The Royal London) than to somewhat vaguely call it a bit of QM, a rather larger and squidgier, uh, thang. I mean by the same token you could almost say it's a University of London campus, cos it kinda sorta is, but we all know how meaningful that is really ... anyway. I am kind-of tempted to edit it now and see where it goes, but it might be nicer to just wait and see what develops in this discussion. Cheers. Nomorenonotnever (talk) 15:35, 25 April 2008 (UTC)
and that was an edit conflict, and I really must leave it for a while now! :) Nomorenonotnever (talk) 15:38, 25 April 2008 (UTC)
