Cengage Learning, formerly Thomson Learning, is a publisher and custom learning solutions provider with operations in 40 countries. The company is headquartered in Stamford, Connecticut, and has approximately 5200 employees worldwide.

In the academic marketplace, it serves higher secondary and graduate-level students, teachers, reference centers, government agencies and corporations in both traditional and distance learning environments.

Offerings include online reference databases, distance learning and test preparation courses, corporate training courses, career assessment tools, and materials for specific academic disciplines.

Imprints unit include South-Western, Cengage Custom Solutions, Course Technology, Delmar Learning, Gale, Arden, Wadsworth, Heinle, Schirmer, Brooks/Cole, Duxbury, ELT, and Nelson.

Key projects that Cengage Learning has executed include:

  1. Complete digitization of The Economist Historical Archive 1843-2003
  2. First phase completion of the digitization process for putting the British Library’s newspaper archive online

[edit] Sale to private equity

It was announced [1] on 25 October 2006 that Thomson Learning would be offered for sale by the Thomson Corporation, with an estimated value of up to US$5 billion. The company was bought by a private equity consortium consisting of Apax Partners and OMERS Capital Partners for US$7.75 billion and the name was changed on 24 July 2007.
