From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Steel magnate, Andrew Carnegie (1835 – 1919) spread his great wealth through philanthropic efforts beginning in the 1880s. His donations established over 3,000 libraries in 47 states, Canada, Britain, Ireland, Australia, New Zealand, the West Indies, and Fiji. The recipient municipalities were required to provide the site and provide funding for operation and maintenance.[1]
