The name Carty is in the Irish language is "Ó Carthaigh". Carthy is a misspelling of the name Carty. Carty is pronounced [ˈkɑrti], whereas Carthy is pronounced [ˈkɑrθi].
The Irish form is pronounced [oː ˈkarhiː] in Connacht Irish and Ulster Irish, and [oː ˈkarhəɟ] in Munster Irish.
The name originates from Wexford in Ireland, starting as a subclan of the Mac / Mc Carthys, and a member of the Clan Eoghanachta. Today it is a common name today in Wexford, Cork, Galway and Roscommon, it was common in Longford under the spelling of Carthy until the last thirty years.

In Montserrat, Carty is a common name, due to the Irish settlers on the Island, and some of the black slaves taking the name, which was a common occurrence at the time. The same is true in Anguilla, there are still European descendants on the island as well as those of African descent.
