Carlson School of Management

The Carlson School of Management (CSOM) is the business school for undergraduates and graduates at the University of Minnesota Twin Cities. CSOM is located on the West Bank of the University of Minnesota campus, and consistently ranks in the top 5 schools nationwide for the study of Management Information Systems. It is credited as being one of the first two schools providing this major, having started it the same year as MIT. The Human Resources and Industrial Relations program is ranked in the top 3 nationwide for this field of study.[citation needed]
CSOM was founded in 1919 as the University of Minnesota School of Management with 14 faculty and 88 students enrolled. In 1986, the school was renamed after Curt Carlson, a local businessman, founder of the Carlson Companies, and a prominent donator to the University of Minnesota. As of 2007, CSOM has more than 4,250 students, 9 degree programs, 103 tenure-track faculty, dozens of adjunct faculty and more than 47,000 alumni in a network that spans the globe. The Academy of Management Journal has ranked Carlson School faculty 7th for research productivity, and a number of programs are ranked in the top 10 nationally for the number of articles published in leading industry journals.[citation needed]
CSOM offers full-time, part-time, and executive MBA programs along with undergraduate studies and doctoral programs in Business. The full-time MBA program enrolls approximately 120 new students each year. Other programs offered at the school include Masters in Human Resource and Industrial Relations (MA-HRIR), Doctoral program in Human Resource and Industrial Relations (Ph.D.-HRIR), Masters in Business Taxation (MBT) and Masters in Accountancy (MACC).
As of the 2007 edition of the U.S. News & World Report, CSOM has the following rankings:
- 25th Full-time MBA
- 10th Part-time MBA
- 20th Executive MBA
- 12th Undergraduate in the nation, 7th among public universities
The 2007 Businessweek rankings report CSOM as follows:
- 46th Undergraduate in the Nation, 26th among publicly funded Universities
As part of a $40 million expansion project, Herbert M. Hanson Jr. Hall will nearly double the size of the business school, and provide a state-of-the-art home for the Carlson Undergraduate program. The building will open on September 25, 2008. Hanson Hall will include an atrium, technology-rich classrooms, collaborative learning spaces, an undergraduate lounge, a business career center, and rooms for students to meet recruiters. Hanson Hall will also provide a home to the College of Liberal Arts’ Department of Economics.
