Care Bears on Fire is a Brooklyn-based band, which formed in 2004 under the name Nada Clue, chosen by former band mate Lyle . The band labels itself as a Pop Punk group, mixing in Alternative and Garage elements. The band released their first, full length LP, I Stole Your Animal on September 28th, 2007, at a release party in Brooklyn. The band regularly rehearses in Lucio's basement. The members of Care Bears on Fire are all in 7th grade. [1]
The members of Care Bears on Fire have known each other since their kindergarten days, but were not friends with each other at the time. In 2004, the band began life when Sophie and Lucio attended creative-arts camp to take a course in music, while band-mate Isadora "Izzy" had attended Rock School for Girls. Sophie and long-time friend Lyle decided that they wanted to form a band, and decided to take up the idea with Izzy (who she had met formally in third grade), and Lucio (who she got to know through the band).
The band, as previously mentioned, began as Nada Clue (suggested by Lyle). But after Lyle left the band in 2005 over "musical differences", it was decided by the trio that their name should be changed. They eventually settled on Care Bears on Fire because they liked the idea of mixing something sweet with something edgy.
The band got their biggest break yet when New York Magazine did a profile on the three in the summer of 2006[2]. After their article was published, Care Bears on Fire became more well known, sources such as Spin Magazine calling Care Bears "...key players in the burgeoning New York kid-core scene..." As time pressed on, their gigging schedule picked up, and were eventually playing regular shows. They released their first EP, Confuse Me on Beautiful Records at a show in 2006, quickly selling out and paving the way for bigger things.[3]
[edit] I Stole Your Animal Era
In February 2007, the aspiring trio had their Manhattan debut at Piano's, an event which wasn't advertised as all ages. Although most of the crowd had been much older than any of the band members, it was reported by Izzy's mother, Elissa that "...they [The crowd] sang along with the songs—especially 'Don't Want To Be Like Everybody Else.' That sort of blew the kids' minds." Shortly after their Big Apple debut, the band began working on new material.
The band formally released their debut LP, I Stole Your Animal on October 2nd, 2007, and four days prior (September 28th, 2007) at a release party in Manhattan. The album received generally positive reviews from critics, publications such as Detour stating that "The songs are catchy, with an earnest rhythm section backing up the same big guitar chords the grownup garage-punk bands use..."[4], and Anna Creech Blogcritics Magazine praising the album as "...a must-have for modern rock fans." [5] Gmurray of Pop Syndicate though, thought that "As kids Care Bears on Fire play well, but as professional musicians, not so much."[6]
Sophie is featured on a 2007 Converse ad, playing an acoustic version of their song, "Everybody Else".[7]
