Canaan Valley Resort State Park (CVRSP) is a state park within Canaan Valley, Tucker County, West Virginia.

Unlike more traditional state parks in West Virginia, the CVRSP is actually a commercial ski resort, operated under contract with the state by Guest Services, Inc. It receives no direct state subsidy and has virtually no state employees on site.

[edit] History

In the early 1950s, the Washington Ski Club began developing ski slopes on the Canaan Valley side of Bald Knob of Cabin Mountain[1]. Because of its protection from the sun, snow on that side of the mountain often remains until April or later. By 1956, a 3,600 foot slope on Cabin Mountain and a 3,900 slope on Weiss Knob had been developed. The following year, the state made its first land acquisition with an eye toward further developing a ski industry in West Virginia. It was not until 1971, however, that the Canaan Valley Resort State Park was established centering on the ski slopes at the southern end of the Valley. In 1972, an 18 hole golf course was also constructed there. The CVRSP Lodge opened in 1977.[2]

The CVRSP has been very successful and several private ski operations have opened nearby and in other parts of the state as well.

[edit] Amenities and recreation

The CVRSP features a 250 room ski lodge, cabins, and camping. In an attempt to develop into a "four seasons" resort, it has developed hiking trails, bike trails, and a championship-level golf course.
