The following sentence:

It was capable of powering these heavy cars to speeds in excess of 80 mph (130 km/h), 100 mph (160 km/h) for some of the lighter examples.

makes no sense at all. Top speed is not affected in any way by weight. A heavy and a light car, with the same engine power, and same streamline, will have exactly the same top speed. The lighter car will simply reach this same top speed faster.
