There are six land divisions in Western Australia. The Rabbit-proof fence is on the border line between the North West and South West divisions on the western side, and the others on the eastern side.

The divisions were altered c.1900; previously there had been six somewhat different divisions; this 1893 map shows a Gascoyne Division, but no Central Division. The same divisions are shown on: [1], [2]

In brackets is the division they are located in (West, South West, Central, Eucla, or Kimberley). In 1909, none of the land districts were located wholly in the Eastern Division, which was made up of mostly desert regions. (Pardu District was located in part of it). The land districts are further subdivided into locations and lots.

There were 26 counties in the south-western part of the state, designated shortly after the Swan River Colony was founded in 1829. It was also originally intended for these to be subdivided into hundreds and parishes also, but this did not happen.
