- Most of the spam has now been removed. As a guide to the sort of spam that is possible when an extraordinary effort is made to insert it, this included:
- changing the links to the ISBNs so instead of using our standard publisherr-neutral ISBN linking mechanism , they went tdirectly to the page advertising the book on the publishers site.
- listing the publisher & putting in links only for those of his book published by Random House, and not those from even more distinguished publishers, like Cambridge University Press.
- repeating the basic biographic facts in discussing several different books.
- linking as often as possible to the name of that publisher
and all of this beyond the usual spam techniques of
- repeating the name of the author as often as possible
- using many adjectives to describe the importance of the author and the work
- including an extensive summary of a book
- using a description of a book to include extensive basic information of the general subject
The publisher's ip inserting this material has, of course, also been blocked. I note, by the way, that the author is very notable in the field, and the article needed no such efforts to show it. I had not known of him before, and, as an example of the usefulness of Wikipedia, I am in fact going to read one his books that seems of particular interest to me-- not, as it happens, one published by Random House.
