[edit] Center of the City?

Broad Street is not, in fact, in the center of the original city of Philadelphia; the eastern bank of the Schuylkill runs along the line of perhaps 24th or 25th Street in Center City. A map shows it's about 1.3 miles from where Broad and Market would intersect to the foot of Market at the Delaware, and about 0.9 miles from Broad and Market to where Market meets the Schulykill.

Also, Market is not in the center of the original city limits; they ran from Vine to South, so Market is closer to the northern side of the old city limits than the southern.

The statement that Broad and Market is the exact center of the original city, then, is not true. However, it's definitely an important point symbolically; I've definitely heard people refer to their distance from Philadelphia as a distance "from Billy Penn's hat", for example. So I let it stand that this is considered the center of the city. Izzycat 02:35, 24 February 2006 (UTC)

  • Good thinking, there's no need to rewrite long standing tradition.-- danntm T C 04:43, 16 December 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Article's Photo

I can take a picture of North and South Broad Streets in a few days, should we replace the main picture with a daytime picture? RegBarc 22:22, 18 March 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Longest straight street

Is it in fact the longest straight street? That sentence was just deleted for lacking citation. Just wondering if anyone knows for sure. --George100 19:57, 23 July 2007 (UTC)
