[edit] Three Cocks Junction railway station

Three Cocks Junction

Three Cocks Junction was a railway station named after a local hostelry, which still exists, that operated in the English-Welsh borders, south of the town of Hay - on - Wye. Opened on 21 September 1864, the station was almost purely an interchange and saw very little local traffic; On one day in about 1958 receipts amounted to 9d (4p). The station closed to passengers on 31 December 1962, a few months before the Beeching report was published.

The station had four platforms and a signal box.

The station was run by the Cambrian Railway, moving into the Great Western Railway in the 1923 grouping.

[edit] Planning and Construction

Cambrian 21 Sept 1864 HH&B 31 December 1962 BTC

Situated north south east west of the place, on the road to nextown, the station consisted of two platforms for the passing loop on the single line. A station building stood on the platform. There was also a small goods yard, engine shed and signal box. This controlled the adjacent level crossing.

The station was intended to serve the Vapour trade. When that did not meet expected levels, the line turned to the Other trade. However, this petered out and the line eked out a quiet existence carrying sparse local passengers and agricultural produce.

[edit] Operation

Opened by the First Railway Company in 0000, then by the pre-grouping railway company from 0000, it became part of the

Great Western
London, Midland and Scottish Railway
London and North Eastern Railway
Southern Railway
during the Grouping of 1923. The line then passed on to the
London Midland Region of British Railways
Scottish Region of British Railways
Southern Region of British Railways
Western Region of British Railways
Eastern Region of British Railways
on nationalisation in 1948.
When Sectorisation was introduced, the station was served by the
Intercity Sector
Network South East
Regional Railways
Privatisation saw services run by the railway company, then by the other railway company.

[edit] Decline and Closure

The station became the terminus when services to Oldterminus were withdrawn in 0000. Services were provided by auto trains railmotors until the locomotive shed closed when diesel multiple units took over in 0000. Goods services were withdrawn in 0000. Despite local protest passenger services were withdrawn in 0000.

The station was an early victim of nationalisation, closing in 0000.

The station was a victim of the Beeching Axe, closing in 0000.

The station survived until 0000, despite being listed for closure in the Beeching Axe.

The station closed in 0000, despite being ignored by the Beeching Axe.

Closure to passengers left goods traffic working to the Widget Factory until that closed in 0000.

The station has a new lease of life as a heritage commuter the new factory building of local suburbs.

[edit] The Site Today

Today the site is a popular walk industrial estate part of the bypass derelict a small housing estate.

[edit] Lymington Junction

Lymington Junction was a railway junction which existed on what is now the South Western Main Line in the English county of Hampshire. Located about a mile west of Brockenhurst in the New Forest, it functioned from 1856 to 1978. The Southampton and Dorchester Railway had opened in 1847, but its promoters used an inland route to serve the important market town of Ringwood and Wimborne. The decision was made to build a branch line to Lymington to serve the town and the ferries to the Isle of Wight. This was authorised in 1856 and opened in 1858, leaving the main line to Ringwood a mile west of Brockenhurst station, necessitating a junction there. Both lines were taken over by the London and South Western Railway, and this company sought a shorter line between London and the growing town of Bournemouth. In 1885, a line opened across the New Forest, leaving the Old Road as the old Southampton and Dorchester line became known, at Lymington Junction. The signal box here was now a busy place, the meeting of two double track lines and the single line to Lymington.

A 21 lever signal box was constructed in the vee of the diverging Bournemouth and Lymington routes to control the points and signals at the junction. One of the duties of the staff was to pass the single line token to the crew of the Lymington train and recover it from trains leaving the branch, and this was done using a platform on the branch side of the box.

[edit] Junction Layout Changes

The Southampton and Dorchester Railway was the only line through the site to close, losing its passenger services in 1964 as a result of the Beeching purges. The section of line to Ringwood was soon lifted. Both remaining lines carried on, and not only the main line to Bournemouth but also the Lymington branch were electrified using the third rail system in 1966. A transformer box was placed near the signal box on the main line to provide power for the new trains.

[edit] Closure

The Brockenhurst station area had been controlled from several signal boxes. British Railways concentrated all of their functions to the single box on the level crossing at the east end of the station. As part of this plan, in 1978 engineers extended and electrified a siding, which had been part of the station goods yard, as far as the junction. As a result the Lymington train would from then on use this track, independent of the main line, and this and automatic colour light signals rendered the box redundant as the junction no longer existed. It was switched out in September 1978, and the box dismantled.

The line is now operated on the One Train Working principle. [2]

The 21 lever frame from the box is now at Medstead and Four Marks on the Watercress Line Heritage Railway.[3]
