[edit] History

Brightcove was founded in 2004 by Jeremy Allaire, who now serves as CEO.

In March, 2006, Brightcove acquired Seattle-based Metastories, makers of StoryMaker, a publishing tool for video, audio, images, and text.[1]. In May of that same year it established a distribution partnership with TiVo[2][3][4][5] and a content delivery partnership with Limelight Networks[6].

Coinciding with a series of deals with UK media companies, Brightcove opened an office in London in July, 2007.[7]

[edit] Internet TV Partnerships

In December 2005 Brightcove partnered with Reuters to create a program to syndicate customized news video players.[8][9]

In 2006, Brightcove completed a flurry of Internet TV partnership deals with big media companies such as The New York Times Company (NYTimes.com and About.com)[10][11], Discovery Communications (Discovery Channel, Travel Channel, TLC , and Animal Planet)[12], Newsweek[13], Sony BMG[14], Warner Music Group[15], British Sky Broadcasting[16], and Time-Life[17].

In 2007, Brightcove capitalized on a trend of magazine and newspaper publishers expanding into online video[18] by signing deals with print media companies including: Time Inc.[19], TV Guide[19], Washingtonpost.Newsweek Interactive[20], Hachette Filipacchi[21], Rodale[21], Meredith Corporation[22], The Hearst Corporation[23], Nielsen Business Media[24], Crain Communications[24], Reed Business Information[24], Wine Spectator[24], and National Geographic.[24].

Many television and cable media companies began to use Brightcove as an alternate, non-exclusive distribution channel for their video content.[25][26][27][28][29][30][31][7][32] One notable deal, announced in a September 2007 press conference by New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg[33], introduced nyctv on demand, a partnership with publicly-owned tv network nyctv to offer on demand programming online.[34][35]

[edit] Brightcove Studio

The Brightcove Studio is home to the Brightcove Internet TV platform. Geared toward professional video publishers, the studio is used to create, customize, distribute, and monetize video player widgets. Videos, lineups, players, and online channels are all created and managed through a content management system called the Brightcove Console, a Flex-based rich internet application. Monetization is achieved through video sales and advertising.

[edit] Brightcove.tv

Brightcove.tv is a video website dedicated to promoting Brightcove content. Every publisher who creates a Brightcove account is assigned a channel, their own page on Brightcove.tv.

Publishers can customize their channel through the Brightcove Console. Simple details like the channel's name, logo, and description can be updated in the user's profile. The content of a channel is defined by changing the settings of individual titles, lineups, and players to allow distribution and promotion on Brightcove.tv.
