Fields was drafted by the Miami Dolphins in the seventh round (225th overall) of the 2007 NFL Draft. The pick used to select Fields was acquired from the St. Louis Rams during the offseason, when they traded away former Dolphins punter Donnie Jones, who only played two seasons as a Miami Dolphin.

One of the most memorable plays by Fields came on November 26 in a Monday night game against the Pittsburgh Steelers. A rainstorm caused less-than-satisfactory field conditions at Heinz Field. In the third quarter, Fields punted the ball 37 yards and the ball was stuck in the soggy turf upon landing at the Dolphins 48 yard line.
