Bon Iver is the stage and recording name of indie folk singer-songwriter Justin Vernon. The name, Bon Iver, is a bastardization of the French, bon hiver (good winter). He independently released his debut album, For Emma, Forever Ago in 2007, the majority of which was recorded while spending four months in a remote cabin in Wisconsin. He previously was a member of bands Mount Vernon and DeYarmond Edison, both indie-rock bands from Eau Claire, Wisconsin, where Vernon still resides.[2][3]

Vernon's self-released debut as Bon Iver garnered critical acclaim, and was picked up by the indie-rock label Jagjaguwar, which re-released the record in early 2008.[4] The album was released in the UK and Europe by iconic indie 4AD on 12 May, 2008.[5]

When released in the UK, Emma received 5/5 and Album of the Month reviews in both Mojo and Uncut magazines. It is currently the highest rated album of 2008 on review-aggregator site Metacritic, with accolades from publications including The Village Voice, The Hartford Courant and The A.V. Club.[6]

Bon Iver's track 'The Wolves Act I and II' was featured on season 4 of Grey's Anatomy on 5/15/08 in the episode 'Losing My Mind'. Another track "Re: Stacks" was played during the season 4 finale "Wilson's Heart" of the TV show House M.D. on 5/19/08.

Bon Iver made an appearance on Later...With Jools Holland on 16/05/08 (recorded on 12/5/08), and played his track 'Skinny Love'. He supported Iron & Wine at the Kentish Town Forum, London, on 16/5/08.
