Indie folk

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Indie folk is a genre and musical style primarily categorized by "independent" smaller music labels supporting progressive folk music artists. Greatly influenced by the American folk music revival of the 1950s and 1960s, indie folk arose in the 1980s and 1990s from singer/songwriters affected by indie alternative/rock music. Appearing as a result of the diasporas of folk sound into popular music genres and the emerging use of the word "indie" to refer to a specific sound or association the genre was born. This genre is often closely related to others including folk rock, freak folk, folk-punk, anti-folk, and psych folk. This genre is on the rise again and is being aided by festivals such as Bonnaroo and Coachella.

Ward, Bright Eyes, CocoRosie, Maggie Simpson, Plunkett, The Colorful Quiet, Matt Costa, Tobacco Pat, Motel Motel, The Mountain Goats , The Decemberists,Beirut(band) and many other artists.
