[edit] Forensics and debate

Blacksburg High School is one of the state's premier schools for forensics and debate. The school rose to prominence in debate in the early 1980's, coached by Frank Moseley and led by academic advisor Michael Cronin, a former national champion in college debate at Georgetown. The team won district and regional championships consistently between 1978 through 1982. In 1981 and 1982, the switch side team of Ray Allen and Jim Baker won state AA championships in policy debate and garnered the top two spots in individual speaker awards in 1982. From 1988 to 2003, under Coach Karen Finch, the school won 15 consecutive Group AA state titles in forensics and debate, "the longest unbroken chain of championships in VHSL history". The school sends students to national level competition annually, and has had several national champions, specifically in the extemporaneous speaking category. Dennis Price won the National Championship in Prose Interpretation in 1994. Jeff Emerson won the National Championship in Humorous Interpretation in 1991. Members of the debate team are commonly referred to as master-debaters by students at the school. The Debating team currently consists of 4 divisions, in Lincoln-Douglas Debate, Policy Debate, Public Forum Debate, and Student Congress. The school has traditionally been strong in Policy Debate, but currently holds a strong team in Lincoln-Douglas Debate, which includes Philip Lu, Chris Baik, Joy Chen, George Wang, and Tim Gao as well as notable novices such as James Sullivan, Katy Jones, Lauren Hoops, Tonya Gao, and Kevin Yoon. The debate team is the 2007 VHSL Group AA state title, pushing out notable opponents such as Potomac Falls and Charlottesville. Another addition to the debate team is the student congress team. This team is lead fearlessly by Kyle Redican and Mikey Arthur. Members of importance include Shivesh Puri and Landon Klein and Sam Hopkins, who lead the team in placing and in speeches given. He did very well last year. The team is the most feared team, but the least respected. The team will go under the leadership of Chris Arthur in 2009-2011.

[edit] MACC

The math and all-around teams finished 1st for the season in the eastern division. The science and social studies teams finished 2nd for the season, and the English team finished 4th.

The math team finished 2nd in the tournament, and because they were the season winners, they will participate in Super MACC (tournament) on March 26, 2007. The science team finished 1st in the tournament, making them also eligible to participate in Super MACC. The all-around team will also go to the Super MACC (tournament) because they finished first in the season.

The 2007 MACC season was officially over on March 26, 2007 after the Super MACC (tournament). The Blacksburg Math and Science MACC teams took the gold trophy home with very close matches. The all-around team finished second in the tournament.

[edit] Science

Blacksburg High School is also know for academic excellence. Suzanne Dana, a Chemistry teacher, recently won the Teacher of the Year award. She attended a conference and was presented with a plaque and a school-wide intercom announcement from Michael D. Hurst.
