AA Region IV is one of the four AA regions in the Virginia High School League. It is made up of three districts: the AA Piedmont District, the AA River Ridge District, and the AA Southwest District.
The members of Region IV are all located in Southwest Virginia and is also the smallest region in terms of membership in AA, due to many of its members losing membership and dropping into Group A. Gate City High School, Lebanon High School, John S. Battle High School, Radford High School, Giles High School, and George Wythe High School are some of the schools that have dropped in classification since the 1980's. In Henry County, Virginia, Laurel Park High School and Fieldale-Collinsville High School closed after the 2001-2002 school year, with their student populations consolidated into Magna Vista and Bassett High Schools. Some schools, such as Graham High School have Group A sized student bodies but currently choose to play in Group AA. In addition, Lee High School is over 90 minutes from their closest Group AA opponent, leading to travel difficulties. Because of this, for the 2007-2009 playing cycle, there has been a considerable shifting among AA districts to different regions, including the moving of the AA River Ridge District into Region IV from Region III, and the declaration of a travel hardship for Lee, allowing them to play in Group A. Virginia High School will also drop to Group A. The AA Highlands District was disbanded in 2007 when former members dropped to Group A and the remaining Group AA schools moved into the Southwest District.
