Big River is a census-designated place (CDP) in San Bernardino County, California, United States. The population was 1,266 at the 2000 census.

Big River is located on the west bank of the Colorado River at 34°8′2″N, 114°22′11″W (34.134021, -114.369782)[1].

According to the United States Census Bureau, the CDP has a total area of 29.7 km² (11.4 mi²). 28.3 km² (10.9 mi²) of it is land and 1.4 km² (0.5 mi²) of it (4.72%) is water.

As of the census[2] of 2000, there were 1,266 people, 570 households, and 369 families residing in the CDP. The population density was 44.8/km² (116.0/mi²). There were 1,053 housing units at an average density of 37.3/km² (96.5/mi²). The racial makeup of the CDP was 84.91% White, 2.53% African American, 2.53% Native American, 0.95% Asian, 6.32% from other races, and 2.76% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 9.64% of the population.

There were 570 households out of which 17.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 51.8% were married couples living together, 8.8% had a female householder with no husband present, and 35.1% were non-families. 27.7% of all households were made up of individuals and 15.8% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.22 and the average family size was 2.66.

In the CDP the population was spread out with 19.3% under the age of 18, 4.1% from 18 to 24, 18.6% from 25 to 44, 26.4% from 45 to 64, and 31.7% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 53 years. For every 100 females there were 91.5 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 91.7 males.

The median income for a household in the CDP was $23,488, and the median income for a family was $26,250. Males had a median income of $25,000 versus $20,125 for females. The per capita income for the CDP was $13,862. About 13.1% of families and 18.5% of the population were below the poverty line, including 26.3% of those under age 18 and 8.6% of those age 65 or over.

In the state legislature Big River is located in the 18th Senate District, represented by Republican Roy Ashburn, and in the 34th Assembly District, represented by Republican Bill Maze. Federally, Big River is located in California's 41st congressional district, which has a Cook PVI of R +9[3] and is represented by Republican Jerry Lewis.
