BHIE may well become the protocol on which a national healthcare IT network is based. Its development parallels that of the internet, which was an outgrowth of government protocols for computer data exchange in the 1970's and 1980s.

By agreeing to use TCP/IP, the governmentally developed communication protocol, the Internet was forged.

In a similar fashion, if healthcare facilities agree to use BHIE nationwide, a healthcare "Internet" will similarly be born. Physadvoc 20:06, 12 July 2007 (UTC)
