Baton Rouge, French: Bâton-Rouge (pronounced /ˈbætn ˈɹuːʒ/ in English, and Image:ltspkr.png/bɑtɔ̃ ʀuʒ/ in French) is the capital. Baton Rouge serves as the parish seat of East Baton Rouge Parish. In June 2005 East Baton Rouge Parish contained 412,000 residents. Baton Rouge is located in the southeast portion of the state along the Mississippi River. It owes its location and its historical importance to its site upon Istrouma Bluff, the first bluff upriver from the Mississippi delta, which protects the city’s 224,097 residents from flooding and other natural disasters. In addition to the natural protection, the city sports a levee system stretching from the bluff southward to protect the riverfront and the southern agricultural areas. (read more . . . )

The Louisiana State Capitol building is the capitol building of the state of Louisiana, located in Baton Rouge. The capitol houses the Louisiana State Legislature, the governor's office, and parts of the executive branch. At 450 feet (137 metre) tall with 34 stories, it is the tallest capitol building in the United States. It is located on a 27-acre tract, which includes the capitol gardens. The Louisiana State Capitol building is a National Historic Landmark. As part of his gubernatorial campaign in 1928, Huey Long advocated the construction of a new, modern capitol building to replace the Old Louisiana State Capitol building, built in 1847. Ground was broken in 1930, and the 27-month construction completed in March 1932 at a cost of only $5,000,000. In 1935, former governor of Louisiana, and then Senator Huey Long was shot in the Capitol building. He died two days later as a result of his wounds and is interred in the capitol gardens.
