I thought it would be nice if there were a page that detailed the capabilities of the BCL. I am not familiar with every namespace, so I used the official documentation directly in places. Hopefully, it will improve a lot from here. Calwiki 10:38, 12 January 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Namespaces

This article is about the BCL, or so the title says. Why does it include namespaces which aren't part of the BCL? --Stefán Örvarr Sigmundsson (talk) 20:30, 10 December 2007 (UTC)

I think we should rather have all the namespaces in an article entitled Framework Class Library. Having them all under the BCL is wrong and misleading. --Stefán Örvarr Sigmundsson (talk) 20:31, 10 December 2007 (UTC)
Are you certain? From page 3 of Pro C# 2008 and the .NET 3.5 Platform (Apress) by Andrew Troelsen:

"This chapter also provides you with a survey of the funtionality supplied by the .NET base class libraries, sometimes abbreviated as the BCL or alternatively as the FCL (being the Framework class libraries)."

--David Gannon (talk) 18:35, 26 December 2007 (UTC)

there seems 2 b lot of confusion arnd. see related thrd on my talk. the ms link specifically says bcl has only a handful nf ns. --soum talk 00:45, 27 December 2007 (UTC)

I'm starting to think it's not true. From page 26 of the book:

"As it turns out, however, the .NET base class library defines a number of topmost root namespaces beyond System, the most useful of which is named Microsoft."

This is the fourth edition of a very popular book, and it does not say there is any difference between BCL and FCL, but only that one designation should be used over the other, so I don't think the alleged distinction should be present on Wikipedia. --David Gannon (talk) 00:59, 28 December 2007 (UTC)
And this is from Microsoft MSDN documentation directly: the entire Base Class Library has only namespaces whereas the framework class library is the entire library. I am sending a mail to the BCL team to request clarification. --soum talk 03:43, 28 December 2007 (UTC)
