[edit] Life

Bas lives in Maren-Kessel in the town Lith. He is a gymnasium student at the Maaslandcollege in Oss.

[edit] The cancer

In 2003 Bas broke his right leg. He recovered, but still had lots of pain in his right leg. There came a time of lots and lots of different hospital visits, to find out what it could be. The diagnosis: Osteosarcoma on the right femur. Bas was treated with chemotherapy and a lot of operations, so he could keep his rightleg.

Then the next developement came. The physicians saw a new tumor in his right leg. This time the only way to survive was the amputation of the whole right leg and after the amputation again 9 chemo's. He learned to live with one leg and he tried to do everything what a person with 2 legs can do.

But in 2007 cancer came back in Bas' left lung. After operating a little part of the left lung, he still has every week a x-ray of his lung and every 3 months a lung- and bonescan.

And after all of this he now found a new passion: weelchair basketbal, he plays now a the Rolstoelbasketball Achilles Flames team. [2]

[edit] In the media

He tells his story to newspapers [3] , at radio stations and in television shows like Je zal het maar hebben (It could've been you) [4] from the TV station BNN. The Dutch TV station AVRO featured another programme called Vinger aan de pols.

Bas has also done photoshootings with Henk van Kooten and Erik Hijweege.
