Barking Football Club (originally named Barking Woodville F.C.) is a football club based in Barking, England. They are known to have been founding members of the London League and were established in circa 1865.
In 1912, "The Blues" were founder members of the Athenian League, but withdrew and had their record expunged in the opening season. They changed their name to Barking Town in 1919 but changed back changed back to Barking in 1932, having rejoined the Athenian League, of which they were winners in 1934-35.
They were champions of the London League Division One A for the 1909-10 season. They left the Athenian League to join the Isthmian League in 1952, and were champions of the Isthmian League Premier Division in 1979.
In 2001, they merged with East Ham and were renamed Barking & East Ham United. This team played in the Southern League Division One East. Following the collapse of Barking & East Ham United in 2006, Barking F.C. have been re-formed and play in the Essex Senior League.
[edit] West Ham Charity Cup
It is known that three of the teams that contested the first tournament in 1895-96 were Barking, Park Grove F.C. and Thames Ironworks, who would later become West Ham United. In one of the semi-finals, Thames Ironworks beat Park Grove 1-0, in a game staged in Plaistow. Park Grove protested over a technicality and forced a replay at Beckton Road, which The Ironworks won 3-0. An epic confrontation followed the next season as Thames Ironworks F.C. faced Barking F.C. in the final of the West Ham Charity Cup on 21 March 1896 at The Old Spotted Dog Ground in Upton Lane. Drawing 2-2, the match was replayed a week later, and again the teams drew, this time 0-0. Eventually the final was replayed for the second time on 20 April 1896 and "The Irons" won 1-0, lifting a trophy in their first ever season.
