Can somebody find out how the Banks registration number at companies house is C1 rather than a 6 digit number like any other company.

The Bank of Rip off Ireland does not like to be held accountable

The reason for the different registration number type is that Bank of Ireland's establishment predates the 1963 Act which set up the Companies Registration Office (CRO), from which registration numbers emanate (the Bank was set up in 1783).

BOI is quite unique among Irish companies in that it is not incorporated under the Companies' Acts, but by its own legislation. This is part of the reason why it has a Governor rather than a Chairman, a Court of Directors rather than a Board, and an Annual General Court rather than an AGM. It also does not have to incorporate the words "public limited company" or the Irish equivilant into its name. The Bank of Scotland was quite similar until recently, but converted into a regular PLC last month. Had BOI's attempted merge-over with Abbey National taken place a few years ago, it would have converted to a PLC (and moved its registeration to England and Wales). --Rdd 20:00, 8 October 2007 (UTC)
